People with complex disabilities often find public facility fitouts lack accessibility and vital features – which can create anxiety when out and about.
At Formula Interiors, we have experience in building accredited Changing Places public facilities, which offer fit-for-purpose fixtures and fittings.
Here are some of the essential elements to consider in a Changing Places fitout.
1. Ample space
Extra space and ease of circulation around toilets and changing tables is a necessary feature in accessible facilities.
2. Peninsula toilet
A peninsula toilet should be included, with space either side for wheelchairs to be placed adjacent and the carer to assist. The inclusion of a privacy screen in accessible toilets provides an additional element of discretion for those who require a carer with them at all times. Wall-mounted grab rails and support rails should be placed on both sides of the toilet.
3. High ceilings
The ceiling height of public facilities must be considered in light of installation requirements for ceiling hoists and lifters.
4. Adult-sized change table
An adult-sized change table is an essential addition to accessible public facilities to allow for changing and dressing requirements.
Our work on a Changing Places public facility fitout
We recently completed a Changing Places-accredited extension of the Finns Reserve toilet block for Manningham City Council in Melbourne’s north east.
The spacious new extension involved excavation and new slab, brickwork to match the existing block, a pitched timber roof with a higher ceiling height to accommodate a hoist, wall tiling and an epoxy floor. It includes an adult-sized changing table and peninsular toilet with privacy screen, and plenty of room to move. The extension is accessible using the MLAK system, which lowers the risk of vandalism or improper use.
Changing Places facilities are designed to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities and their carers to get out and about more freely. Contact us today to discuss how we can help with public facility fitouts that meet Changing Places guidelines.
