We’re very proud of our role in designing and managing key aspects of the new build and fitout of a Queensland Police outpost in Brisbane, which opened in July 2019.
The impressive new multi-functional premises at Northgate Railway Station presented several challenges around safety, compliance and public access. Yet our extensive experience in handling complex projects ensured we rose to the occasion.
What did the project involve?
We were asked to undertake the new build and interior fitout, as well as manage the broad range of trade services required to complete this important facility.
Who commissioned the works?
The project is a joint enterprise between Queensland Rail and the Queensland Police Service.
How will it help the local area?
The QPS Railway Squad’s Northgate Outpost has been constructed adjacent to the railway lines for a particular purpose. Train travellers will enjoy a greater sense of security, with a police presence in close proximity. Specially trained Railway Patrol Officers will now be both visible and accessible.
What challenges did the new build and fitout present?
Safety was paramount. That’s because contractors were working very close to ‘live’ rail lines, also presenting a potential risk to the many commuters who pass through the station each day. As a result, we had to negotiate the complexities of Queensland Rail’s demanding safety and compliance requirements, while co-ordinating multiple trades needing access to the site.
We kept key access areas clear and safe during building works, ensuring safe, constant pedestrian flow in real time.
Legacy in-ground service locations and client-related design changes also contributed to a challenging build!
What is the new police outpost like?
The Railway Squad Northgate Outpost is now an attractive, fit-for-purpose facility housing the police operational team. This light, open-plan environment features high quality workstations, full power and data services, meeting and interview rooms, joinery, AV, lockers, server services, firearm security facilities, PWD amenities and separate vehicle enclosure.
Wrap-around windows give Railway Squad members maximum visibility in the surrounding road and rail vicinity.
